A Decorator’s Guide to Waterproof Paint
A Decorator’s Guide to Waterproof Paint
If you want exterior surfaces to look their best for longer, waterproof paint is essential. Not only will a waterproof paint prevent peeling, cracking or bubbling, but it will also protect the material beneath from weather damage. Our guide covers the types of waterproof paint and the best options for different materials, from wood to masonry.
What types of paint are waterproof?
The following paints offer varying degrees of waterproofing:
Gloss paint
Acrylic paint
Enamel paint
Masonry paint
Epoxy paint
Silicone paint
Only some are fully weatherproof and should be used outdoors, while others are moisture-resistant and can be used indoors in bathrooms, kitchens and other high-humidity areas. Explore each type below to find out more.
Is gloss paint waterproof?
Most gloss paint is waterproof, but always check the product label before purchasing. For example, some formulas – like Dulux Trade High Gloss – can be used on interior and exterior surfaces, while others are only suitable for indoor applications.
Is acrylic paint waterproof?
Acrylic paint is a durable and waterproof choice for interior and exterior surfaces. It’s often used to paint floors and road markings. Bedec Acrylic Floor Paint is a self-priming, slip-resistant option, while Coo-Var Acrylic Road Line Marking Paint can be used on asphalt, concrete and tarmac.
Is enamel paint waterproof?
Enamel paint is a popular choice for metal garden furniture and exterior trim thanks to its durability and waterproof qualities. It’s also heat-resistant, so it’s often used indoors on radiators. However, not all enamel paints are waterproof, so always check the label before purchasing. A good rule of thumb is that oil-based enamel paints are waterproof, while water-based formulas are not.
Is masonry paint waterproof?
Masonry paint is designed for exterior surfaces, so it’s a reliable waterproof option. The Dulux Trade Weathershield range includes masonry paint in shades to suit any exterior and boasts anti-fade technology for a longer-lasting colour. It’s flexible, improving durability even in extreme weather, and is shower-proof just 15 minutes after application. Alternatively, choose Zinsser Watertite, which contains a biocide to protect against fungus and mould.
Is epoxy paint waterproof?
Epoxy paint provides a durable, waterproof coating on interior and exterior surfaces. It is often used for swimming pools and floors.
Is silicone paint waterproof?
Silicone paint is water-repellent and breathable, making it an excellent choice for exterior applications. It prevents water from settling on the surface and soaking in, which can stop damp and mould from forming in the substrate.
The best waterproof paint for wood
At Dulux Decorator Centre, we stock several high-quality waterproof paints for wood. The Dulux Trade Weathershield range is an excellent choice for any exterior wood, offering up to 8 years of all-weather protection. Explore the complete collection of exterior wood paint to find the right products for any job, whether painting decking, fencing, exterior trim or garden furniture.
Is MDF waterproof when painted?
Since MDF is made from compressed paper pulp, it will never be fully waterproof, even when painted with specialist wood paint. To prolong the life of the material, avoid using it outside or in high-humidity areas like bathrooms and kitchens.
Is fence paint waterproof?
Fence paint is designed to repel water as it’s exclusively used in outdoor applications. Our range includes durable fence and shed paint from top trade brands like Cuprinol and Sikkens.
The best waterproof paint for exterior walls
Always use a specialist exterior masonry paint to ensure maximum weather protection. We stock various masonry paints with waterproofing properties, including the Dulux Trade Weathershield range and leading trade brands like Armstead, Bedec and Zinsser.
How to apply waterproof paint
For maximum waterproofing and long-lasting results on your paintwork, we recommend applying a primer and undercoat as part of the three-step Dulux Weathershield system. This will improve paint adhesion, ensure an even finish and seal the substrate to prevent moisture from seeping through.
When it comes to painting, the necessary steps may differ slightly depending on the surface you’re working with. Explore our step-by-step guides to find expert advice, whether painting doors, fences or decking:
How to maintain waterproof paint
Using the correct products and application technique is the best way to ensure your waterproof paint lasts, but sometimes problems can arise as the paintwork ages.
We recommend regularly inspecting exterior paintwork for cracks, bubbling or peeling so you can fix the problem before it worsens. You can also clean the surface using a mild detergent to remove any pollutants or dirt, helping your paintwork look brand new again.
