To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with members of our team to find out why they chose the apprenticeship route, how it has made a difference to their career path and what advice they would give to others considering embarking on the journey. Here, we speak to Imogen de Salis, an Assistant Manager who completed a Level 4 Retail Management apprenticeship.
What made you take the step to join the Retail Management apprenticeship programme?
I wanted to progress within the company and thought that applying to the apprenticeship programme would teach me the skills I needed to further my professional development. I was confident with running the store, but my weakness was people management. The Level 4 Retail Management apprenticeship gave me the training I needed. I love a challenge and learning new things, so I jumped at the opportunity!
What was the highlight of the apprenticeship programme?
The apprenticeship gave me a better knowledge of the company and its many working parts - from merchandising to organising promotions. Through speaking with multiple different departments, I discovered that everyone has such an important role to play within the business.
How has your career benefitted from taking part in this apprenticeship programme?
A few months after finishing my apprenticeship, I moved to be the Assistant Manager at our Epsom branch. This very busy hub store keeps me on my toes. I am constantly challenged and have loved every minute of it! The skills I gained from my apprenticeship have undoubtedly helped me within my new role and I can notice my People Management skills improving week-on-week.
What advice would you like to share with those considering taking on an apprenticeship?
Just go for it! While it may have been stressful at times, I have absolutely no regrets and would consider doing another apprenticeship in the future. I now have an extra qualification and I have learned such a vast amount about not just our business, but the retail sector as a whole.
