COVID-19 Can Recycling Site Collections & Store Returns Guidance Notes for Customers

As we open more Dulux Decorator Centres to our customers, we are aware that some of you have waste management obligations and we aim to continue to support you through our Can Recycling Scheme.

In the interest of the health and safety of our colleagues and customers, we have created the below guidelines so we can continue with this service, with these measures in place until June 30th pending goverment advice.

All our colleagues are abiding by all required distancing and HSE measures, we are following the specific guidelines for the retail sector as issued by the Government

PLEASE NOTE: Any requests for this service must be pre-booked with the store directly

Process:

Prepare the recycling into relevant bags for return. If you need bags for segregating and collecting waste on site, please notify your store by phone or email. These can be placed with orders to be collected or delivered to site, in line with our Safe Serve no contact collection & delivery service.

Collection from site: please arrange this with your servicing store directly, ensuring that the cans meet the requirements of the scheme and are presented in accordance to the conditions overleaf.

Collections can only be made if the location is accessible by vehicle and social distancing measures can be observed. You will then be required to wait (at an appropriate distance) until cans have been confirmed and accepted by the driver. This is to ensure that can recycling returns are logged against the correct account and reporting accuracy is maintained in relation to certificates.

Returning items to store: please arrange a time slot with the servicing store directly. You will be required to advise the store of the number of cans being returned and whether they are water-based or solvent-based. Can’s must be empty and with only dry paint residue in them. This will operate in line with our Safe Serve no contact collection & delivery service.

When returning cans to store, please notifying the store of your arrival via phone, you will then be required to wait (at an appropriate distance) until cans have been confirmed and accepted by a member of the store team. This is to ensure that can recycling returns are logged against the correct account and reporting accuracy is maintained in relation to certificates.

In all circumstances only AkzoNobel decorative paint cans can be processed through the can recycling scheme. This is to preserve the accuracy of waste codes due to formulation differences that may exist in third party products.

Requirements for onsite collection or store drop off:

  • Cans must be empty and dry

  • Cans for water-based product must be placed in blue recycling bags.

  • Cans for solvent-based product must be placed in red recycling bags.

The segregation of water and solvent-based product by bag colour is a legislative requirement, please support us in our duty of care by ensuring that this is adhered to.

To minimise the number of surfaces handled by our colleagues, bags which are identified as having the wrong cans will be rejected unless corrected by the site.

In the interest of the health and safety of our colleagues and customers we have some additional requirements:

Number of cans per bag temporary change:

  • 10L Cans – no more than 10 cans per bag

  • 5L cans and below – no more than 10 cans per bag

While this will increase bag usage, this is necessary to ensure that our colleagues can safely handle and inspect the bags, in line with our legal duty as a waste carrier.

Stores have been informed that if a bag is filled above these limits, they will reject the collection of that bag. The bag will then have to be rebooked for collection. This is to support with unnecessary body contact and protecting our store teams.

Transfer Notes/Documentation

The Environment Agency has issued Regulatory Position Statement C8 which is in currently in effect until June 30th.

In the current circumstances, you will not be required to sign or be provided with the usual documentation provided at the point of transferring your can recycling waste to Dulux Decorator Centre. However, as you will provide stores with the details such as site address, number and type (water/solvent) of cans when pre-booking your on-site collection or store drop off, this will allow us to complete the paperwork and email it to you within 10 calendar days of the transfer. Documentation will be marked “Completed in accordance with RPS C8”

We would ask that you provide our stores with an appropriate email address so that you can be supplied with a copy for your records.
