Refresh your home's exterior with a fresh coat of paint. Graco paint sprayers for exterior walls are user-friendly and can significantly speed up the painting process compared to traditional rollers or brushes. Follow this simple guide to painting your home's exterior with airless sprayers.
1. Preperation
Move outdoor furniture and other items away from the area to be sprayed. Ensure there's ample space for your tools and equipment. Tape off trim and cover surfaces you don't want sprayed, like windows or shrubs, with plastic.
Use a pressure washer and cleaning solution to wash the entire area. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly.
Remove any dirt, mildew, or mold, and scrape off peeling paint.
Repair damaged siding, soffits, or trim. Drive any loose nails flush. Sand rough surfaces and caulk gaps as needed.
2. Spraying exterior walls
Choose the spray tip that best suits your paint and the surface you're spraying. Ensure the tip's hole size doesn't exceed your sprayer's maximum capacity (check your manual). If using paint from multiple containers, mix it in a 10-liter container to guarantee consistent color.
Begin painting at the top of the area and work downwards, starting with any eaves or undersides of overhangs. The spraying direction depends on the construction – generally, spray exposed trusses, wood beams, or boards by aiming the spray fan pattern lengthwise. A tip extension is helpful for safely spraying hard-to-reach areas like eaves from your ladder.
Work in manageable sections, keeping the spray tip about 12 inches (30 cm) from the surface. A tip extension is useful for safely spraying hard-to-reach areas like eaves or other overhangs from your ladder. Start with the outer edges, "banding" the area you'll spray. For inside corners, aim the spray tip directly into the corner to overlap both sides. Overlap your spray passes by 50%.
After completing the eaves, spray the exterior walls. Cut in around windows and doors first. Then, spray the remaining flat areas, overlapping each pass by 50%.
3. Finishing touches
Allow ample time for the paint to dry before removing the tape from your trim. This will ensure crisp, clean lines.
Remove all coverings from shrubs, bushes, and plants. Carefully remove any tape and plastic covering from window and door trim.
Reinstall any removed hardware, such as lighting fixtures, house numbers, or shutters.
Clean your airless paint sprayer after each use. Follow the instructions in your user's manual for Power Flush cleaning with water-based materials or use the bucket method if applicable. Refer to your Sprayer Operation Manual for more details.
