Camden Town Hall transformed into a boutique hotel

The former Camden Council offices have been transformed into a luxury 277 bedroom boutique hotel with the help of Dulux Trade.

Situated opposite St Pancras Station, the iconic building was built in the 1970’s by Camden Council’s own architects and engineers in the brutalist style. Designed as an office space, the building was used by council staff until 2014, and required extensive renovation and refurbishment to convert the space into a hotel.

The existing eight story building was retained and extensively refurbished, with a three story extension built onto the iconic building. Rethinking the current space and combining this with a new state-of-the-art extension required an experienced team of design and decoration experts, with London-based Archer Humphreys Architects specifying the decorative products and Keylon Interiors.

The project was completed over an 18 month period, with a budget of £1.5 million for decorating and more than 40 decorators from Keylon Interiors working on the project at any one time to complete the major works. The ground floor now accommodates the hotel reception and a bar and restaurant, while the floors above house bedrooms. The three stories added to the top of the building comprise of bedrooms on the first two floors, and a new bar and restaurant, complete with roof terrace on the top floor.

To achieve the luxury and elegance visualised by interior designer Shawn Hausman, more than 20 different Dulux Trade paints were specified, including Dulux Trade Diamond Matt, Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt and Dulux Trade Diamond Eggshell. As the hotel will be a high footfall space, it was imperative that the paints used on the walls and woodwork were highly durable, giving confidence that the rooms would still have a brilliant finish for years to come.

Terry Durkin at Keylon Interiors, says: “This was a very complex project, with a large number of stakeholders, working closely together to achieve a stunning finish. “The Dulux Trade team were true partners, offering the very strongest technical support and sharing their extensive experience, both over the phone and on-site. Their responsiveness and high levels of customer service was invaluable to us. In particular, their support in advising on paints that were compliant with the green building standard, BREEAM was essential to us winning the contract to complete the decoration.”

Peter Rhodes, National Sector Manager – Leisure at Dulux Trade, says: “This is an iconic building that has been given a new lease of life by this refurbishment. Our team worked closely with Keylon Interiors to ensure that the paints specified were appropriate for the spaces and helped them to apply colour in a way that ensured the best finish possible.” The Standard Hotel Kings Cross was developed by McLaren on behalf of Crosstree Investors and Developments. The hotel was designed by ORMS with interior design by Shawn Hausman and decorated by Keylon Interiors, using products including Dulux Trade paint.
